LIBRARY TOURS GREATLY ENJOYED

Gloria Hatterman and Dixie Kucera provided stories from different countries for the enjoyment of the 1st through 3rd graders who attended a week of hour long 'tours' at the Raymond A. Whitwer Tilden Public Library. Mr. Dave Sanne of Florence, Oregon was a guest reader on Wednesday, sharing the story of Ferdinand the Bull with the youngsters. Some of the countries that the children visited through stories included: Arabia, Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Benin, New Guinea and Spain.

Fourth through sixth graders toured Africa for the entire week with programs that were organized by Hella Bauer. Monday they enjoyed a video of African art. Tuesday, Dawn Kucera shared slides and information about her 1998 tour of South Africa, Wednesday and Thursday, Georgia Wyatt helped the children make masks and weave kinte cloth. These pieces of art are on display in the Lied Auditorium. Parents and friends are encouraged to come and see them anytime the library is open.

On Friday, Suzy Awe introduced Bol Bol Diew, Milbaeh Yiech Wah, Moses Datak Biliew, Nyayual Chuol and Nyaluak Poul, Sudanese refugees, currently living in Norfolk who came to share real African music with both groups of children. Suzy also read the story of Anansi and the Talking Melon by Eric Kimmel.

This was a great week of programming for the children of the community.
